Let us remember a Fallen soldier of The Great War memorialised at Sandgate Cemetery.
On the 7th June 1917, Lance Corporal Richard Stephen King, referred to as Dick, 34th Battalion (Reg No-1164), miner (Abermain No.2 Colliery), from Greta Street, Aberdare, New South Wales, father of one (Margaret Martha (Nin), born 9.4.1914, Cessnock, N.S.W., died 31.10.1916, Kendall Street, Lambton, N.S.W., age 2 Years 6 Months, a Bud in Heaven, sleeping here), was killed by an enemy artillery shell, Battle of Messines, Belgium, age 34th years 6 months.
No Roll of Honour circular summited.
Born at Richmond River, New South Wales on the 14th December 1882 as Stephen Richard to Richard Stephen (died? and Martha King, died?, from Nelson Street, South Brisbane, Queensland; husband of Vera Ethel King nee Mowett, married 1913, Kurri Kurri, N.S.W., remarried to William Craig, 12.3.1919, Wickham, N.S.W., an Original Anzac, enlisted 25.9.1914, 13th Battalion, Reg No-145, RTA 2.12.1918, Special 1914 Leave, 45th Battalion, died?, Vera died 22.11.1919, Newcastle Hospital, N.S.W., sleeping here, name not listed on Sandgate Cemetery database or Find a Grave) from Kendall Street, Lambton, New South Wales (1917) and 48 & 50 Fleming Street, Wickham, N.S.W., Dick enlisted on the 10th January 1916 at West Maitland, N.S.W.

Dick’s name has been inscribed on the Cessnock War Memorial, Aberdare Cemetery-Memorial Entrance Gates and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
Dick has been memorialised at the King gravesite, and I have placed poppies in remembrance of their husband and father’s service and supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country. ANGLICAN 1-62. 20.
