Biography contributed by Sharyn Roberts

Distinguished Conduct Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty, and coolness in leading a small party of men against a strong enemy position. In spite of wire entanglements hidden in the crops, and a heavy barrage of bombs and machine gun fire, he succeeded in entering the position and killing 30 of the enemy, the remainder fleeing in disorder.'

SERGEANT GEO. E. THOMAS.

Mrs G. Thomas, of 51 Station road, Seddon, Melbourne, late of Linaer street, Ballarat East, has been officially notified that her son, Sgt George Evan Thomas, of the 6th Battalion, was killed in action
on the 23rd August, in France. He had been on active service for three years, and was 26 years of age. Sgt Thomas was educated at the Mount Pleasant State School, and prior to enlisting was
employed at Flohm and Sons, of Lydiard street. He was well known in football and cricket circles. He leaves a young widow to mourn her loss. Much sympathy is deeply felt with his wife and his bereaved parents in the sad loss they have sustained.
