Son of Ernest William Howarth. Bernard enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 8 July 1915. He served as a Private (Service No. 8234) in the Australian Army Medical Corps, 2nd Australian General Hospital. He was discharged from the AIF on 8 April 1918. He died aged 25 years.

He was accepted for commemoration as war dead on 13 September 2016.
