Son of Albert Bernard O'Neill and Mary Ellen O'Neill nee Howard of Camp Hotel, Maxwelton, QLD. 

Commenced return to Australia on 22 December 1918 aboard HT Bakara disembarking on 5 February 1919 at Fremantle, WA but did not re-embark

On 29 October 1923 William married Rosalind Niomi Edmonds in QLD
