Finlay was a  Sergeant with the 17th Bn. Australian Infantry, A.I.F.

He was 20 and the son of Alexina Kelly (formerly Macdonald), of 1861, 39th Avenue East, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and the late Donald Macdonald.

He was a native of Shieldaig, Ross-shire, Scotland. Shieldaig (Scottish Gaelic: Sìldeag) is a village in Wester Ross in the Northwest Highlands of Scotland.

He attended Dingwall Academy, hence he is honoured on the war memorial there.

Also commemorated is fellow pupil, Australian soldier, Corporal Alister John Ross who also made the supreme sacrifice.
