Life Before the war:
Harold Gordon Furze was born in Adelaide and, when he enlisted in the AIF in September 1914, was a single, 25 year old man. Harold lived on 180 Wright Street. His mother, Ms Elizabeth Furze was his next of kin, and the only person in Harold’s family of whom we have any information. Harold Gordon Furze had a dark complexion with brown eyes and brown hair. Harold’s occupation was a postal employee.
During the war:
On the 23rd of September 1914 Harold Gordon Furze was enlisted to be a part of the war. He was a part of the 10th Infantry Battalion. Harold’s regimental number was 1139.
On the 22nd of December 1914 Harold boarded in Melbourne on the H.MA.T A32 Themistocles ship. This ship brought Harold to the war. The conditions on the ship would have been horrible and very unpleasant.
Harold was not in good health, which became clear when he arrived in Egypt. He had a weak heart, headache, felt dizziness, lung diseases and had influenza (malaria). In Cairo he was first hospitalised by influenza and a few days later returned to hospital with pleurisy. On 22 March 1915 the decision was made to return Harold to Australia. He arrived in Melbourne in late April and was medically discharged from the AIF on 7 May 1915. It was hoped that he would recover sufficiently to be sent overseas again but, by 1916, it was soon clear this was not the case. So Harold did not see fighting in the War.
After the war:
Harold later married Winifred Sabine Furze and they divorced in 1932. Harold died on the 16th of August 1944 as a 55 years old.
