61 years ago today, on the 20th December 1962, Private John Henry Durrant, referred to as Harry, 35th Battalion (Reg No-2423), labourer from Little Denison Street, Carrington, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 75. METHODIST 4-19. 34.

Born at Minmi, New South Wales on the 3rd July 1887 to Joseph Henry, died 23.8.1923, from 147 Little Denison Street, Carrington, N.S.W., age 64, ANGLICAN 1-54. 95. and Sarah Ann Durrant nee Jefferys, died 1.8.1946, from 120 Doran Street, Carrington, N.S.W., age 84, ANGLICAN 1-54. 95.; husband of Ellen Margaret Durrant nee Player (married 1914, Newcastle, N.S.W., died 10.3.1948, Newcastle Hospital, N.S.W., age 58, sleeping here), Harry enlisted on the 14th June 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.


Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A30 Borda on the 17th October 1916.
Wounded in action - 8.6.1917 (GSW or SW right shoulder, right wrist, Battle of Messines).

Transferred to England 12.6.1917.

Commenced return to Australia 19.10.1917.

Harry was invalided home on the 15th December 1917, being discharged medically unfit on the 21st January 1918.

Mr. Durrant’s name has been inscribed on the Carrington Citizens' Memorial Gates, Carrington Municipal District Roll of Honor and the Wickham Superior Public School Roll of Honour. Name not inscribed on the Carrington Methodist Church Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label at Harry’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
