Biography contributed by Geoffrey Gillon

His father was James Wilsher.

Frederick attested March 21st 1916 when he was 18 years and 4 months old. He described himself as a farmer.

He is commemorated on the Stanford-le-Hope  war memorial along with Private John Edward Wilsher who lived at 1, Victoria Road, Stanford-le-Hope. Frederick’s sister Amy’s address in England was 2, Victoria Road, Stanford-le-Hope., so there appears to have been  a family connection between these two fallen soldiers.

Frederick’s battalion had been raised at Bell’s Paddock Camp in Brisbane  in February 1916 with recruits from Brisbane, Northern Queensland and the Northern Rivers District of New South Wales, it forming part of the 11th Brigade of the 3rd Australian Division. After training in Australia and Britain, the 41st Battalion arrived in France from Southampton on 25th November 1916. It entered the front line for the first time on Christmas Eve and spent the bleak winter of 1916-1917 alternating between service in the front line and training and labouring in the rear areas.
