Walter joined the 2nd Machine Gun Battalion and left Adelaide on HMAT Shropshire. He embarked on H.T. Tunisian at Alexandria for France on the 29th May. On the 19th April 1917 Walter was hospitalised with scabies at the 5th Australian Field Ambulance and rejoined his unit, now the 27th Battalion, on the 2nd May. Walter returned home on the Nestor, reaching Australia on June 29th 1919 and was discharged on August the 14th. He received the British War Medal on the 25th April 1921.
