6 Dec 1916: | Honoured Military Medal, 'At GUEUDECOURT on 6th December, 1916. A working party in front line came under barrage fire of heavy shells; Corporal FLEMING was mainly instrumental in guiding them to a place of safety. He then returned and searched the trench for a missing man being twice knocked over by the concussion of shells during the search, found, and brought him in. When the fire slackened he brought the party back onto the work and completed it besides clearing and repairing the front line. During the whole time he showed the greatest coolness and initiative.' | |

Initial enlistment 17 August 1914 under his true name of WILLIAM FAIRWEATHER. Returned to Australia 21 March 1915. Re-enlisted under WILLIAM FLEMING on 10 July 1915. Service Record indicates that he wished to be known as William FLEMING.
