William left Adelaide on board A68 Anchises on 28 August 1916 and disembarked at Plymouth on 11 October. He went to France with the 50th Battalion on 28 December, transferring to the 48th Battalion on 6 February 1917. On 11 April William sustained a bullet wound and severe fracture to the right thigh necessitating evacuation to Southampton General Hospital, England on 3 May. The extent of his injuries resulted in William being returned to Australia from England on 25 August and discharged as medically unfit on 26 November.
