Private Enos Thomas Berry (Service No. 1464), an Australian World War One veteran who was wounded in action at Gallipoli as a 17 year old.
After reviewing thousands of WWI service and medical records, we are confident that Private Berry was among the many returned soldiers who died without sufficient personal means to cover the cost of their own burial. The Repatriation Department (now the Department of Veterans’ Affairs) bore the expense of tens of thousands of veterans’ burials—many of which, like his, have remained unmarked for decades. And there are still thousands upon thousands yet to find.
His grave is among those whose previously unmarked graves in Lutwyche Cemetery we have now honoured with a plaque recognising their service for Australia. We received grant funding for this grave plaque from the Australian Government under the Marking (First World War) Private Graves Grants Program.
On 15 April 2023, his plaque was unveiled in Lutwyche Cemetery, along with a further 300 plaques on the previously unmarked graves of Australian World War One veterans:

Enos Thomas Berry was born on 2 May 1898 in North Queensland, to Enos and Emma (nee Thomas) Berry. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force at Rockhampton, Queensland, on 18 December 1914, giving his age as 19 years 7 months, when he was in fact 16 years 7 months. He gave his occupation as dairyman and named his father, Enos Berry (Snr), as his next of kin. His mother, Emma Berry (née Thomas), had died in 1913.
He was allotted to the 15th Infantry Battalion, 3rd Reinforcements, and embarked from Brisbane aboard HMAT Seang Choon (A49) on 13 February 1915, bound for Egypt and subsequently the Gallipoli Peninsula.
While serving with the 15th Battalion at Gallipoli, he was wounded in action on 8 August 1915, during the fierce fighting at the Anzac sector, initially reported missing and later confirmed wounded. He was invalided to Australia and discharged from the AIF on 12 December 1915 on medical grounds.
After being invalided home in late 1915, he remained on the Depot strength in Queensland while undergoing medical supervision. His record shows continued Depot service until his final discharge entry dated 7 July 1917, which formally ended his AIF obligations.
Post war, Enos was living in the Rockhampton district and working as a labourer. By 1943 he was living at the Peoples Palace, Ann Street, Brisbane City.
His funeral notice was published on Monday 19 July 1948:
“BERRY, Enos T.—The Funeral of Enos Thomas Berry, of Blissener Rd., Banyo, late 15th Battn., 1st A.I.F., will leave the Funeral Chapel, Wickham Street, Valley, This (Monday) Afternoon, at 2 o'clock, for Lutwyche Cemetery.”
Private Enos Thomas Berry died 13 July 1948, aged 50, and was interred in Anzac Portion 7 at Lutwyche Cemetery, Brisbane. He was a single man who had no known children.
After decades without recognition, the grave of Private Enos Thomas Berry, a 17 year old Australian boy wounded in action at Gallipoli in August 1915, now bears a plaque commemorating his service to Australia — ensuring his name endures among those remembered for their duty and sacrifice.
Lest We Forget.
