Two of his brothers died, 979 Pte Henry Peter Preece 39th Battalion AIF was killed in action, 14 April 1917 and 2649 Driver Thomas Andrew Preece, 1st Field Artillery Brigade AIF, was killed in action 6 October 1917.
Alfred returned to Australia in April 1919, with medical issues from gassing, including influenza and a pulmonary condition. He passed away in 1924, at the age of 43, married and the father of eight children.
His death was officially acknowledged by the authorities as due to war service and his wife, Norah, was sent a memorial plaque and scroll during August 1924, a few months after his death.
