Richard Ernest Cleaver
Richard Ernest Cleaver was born November 1891 in Majors Creek, New South Wales. He enlisted in the AIF in September 1915 and was sent to Egypt where he was posted to the 5th Division Cyclist Corps (mounted infantry) in April 1916. In June, his unit left Egypt aboard the Oriana for Marseilles. He served in France from June 1916 to July 1917 mainly with the 2nd Anzac Cyclist Battalion but with occasional detachments to anti-aircraft units. In July 1917 he was transferred to hospital in England with serious middle ear infections. He returned to Australia in November 1917 and was discharged from the AIF on 27 December 1917. On his enlistment papers, he gave his civilian occupation as linesman and his next-of-kin as his father, Richard, of 81 John Street Pyrmont.
Richard Ernest Cleaver married Ida Jackson in Sydney in 1931. They had one son, Jim. Richard Ernest died on 10 September 1938 at Randwick Military Hospital. He was 47.
