According to the records of the Australian War Memorial and National Australian Archives the only H. Lange to have enlisted was Herman August Carl Lange. However, a definite link to the Adelaide Hills region could not be established.
Herman left Sydney on the Beltana on 25 November 1916 and disembarked at Devonport, England on 29 January 1917. He was sent from Folkestone, England to France with the 4th Pioneer Battalion on 21 June. Herman was slightly wounded in action on 8 July but remained on duty. He was hospitalised with scabies from 8 August to 13 November when he was able to rejoin his unit. Herman was invalided from France on 27 August with influenza and admitted to the Military Hospital in Alexandria. He returned to Australia on the Ceramic on 25 January 1919. Whilst on the journey home he received treatment for cellulitis on board a hospital ship on 14 March. Herman was discharged on 1 June.
