Tom Stuart Tidy was born on 4 August 1881 in Islington, London, Middlesex, England. Before the war, he worked as an electrical engineer. Tidy also had previous military experience, serving 2 years and 291 days in the Territorial Force as well as 2 years and 4 months as a sergeant in the 1st Essex Volunteer Royal Garrison Artillery. He also had a brother called G W Tidy.
Tom Stuart Tidy enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) on 24 August 1914 at Morphettville, South Australia, at the age of 33. On 20 October 1914, Tidy sailed from Australia on the ship Ionian to join the MEF. Tidy arrived in Gallipoli in March 1915 to take part in the Gallipoli Campaign and served with the 10th Battalion. Tidy was injured and hospitalised many times during his time in the military.
At some point between 25-29 April 1915, he was wounded in action, suffering an injury to his sacrum, and was admitted to hospital. On 2 May 1915, he was diagnosed with a bullet wound in the back and was discharged from hospital after 10 days. Tidy later on 1st July sustained another bullet wound this time to his right thigh and was admitted to the 1st General Hospital in Cairo, eventually being transferred to England after 19 days for further treatment. On 20 July 1915, he travelled aboard the H.S. Wandilla for additional care and on 31 July 1915, he was admitted to another hospital where he was further diagnosed as having a sharpnel wound in his right hip. After treatment, Tidy was proceeded to rejoin his unit on 4th October 1915
On 1 December 1915, he was transferred to the ANZAC Supernumerary Rank. After Gallipolli he returned to Egypt, then on 5 July 1916 he was assigned to duty at the depot stores at Ghezaich. He sailed from Alexandria on 3 September 1916, aboard the Royal George overseas and arrived in England on 24 September 1916. Later, on 14 December, he was admitted to hospital with bronchitis. He remained serving in England until on 19 April 1918, Tidy returned to Australia aboard the HT Marathon. He was officially discharged from the AIF on 2 May 1918, after being declared medically unfit for service.
He passed away on 1 June 1948, at the age of 66, and was buried at the AIF Cemetery in West Terrace, Adelaide, South Australia.
