The 34th Battalion was stationed the village of Cachy, France near Villers Bretonneux on 1 April 1918, when a some large shells entered the town square, which killed around 8 men of the Battalion. McKellar was severely wounded in the abdomen and put on an Ambulance train which was heading for Rouen. He died on the way and was buried in the St. Sever Military Cemetery at Rouen.
His family farmed the property "Nowranie" at Oaklands NSW.
