Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
53 years ago today, on the 17th December 1970, Private William Albert James, 54th Battalion (Reg No-467), wheeler from Cootamundra, New South Wales and Umina?, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 75. ANGLICAN 3-229. 52.
Born at Newtown, New South Wales on the 23rd August 1895 to ? and Sarah James, William enlisted on the 4th January 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A24 Benalla on the 1st May 1916.
Admitted to hospital 17.7.1916 to 30.7.1916 (not stated), 25.9.1917 (buried, suffering shell shock), 1.2.1918 (pyrexia or fever), 20.2.1918 (neurasthenia).
Wounded in action - 15.5.1917 (shell shock).
Granted leave to England from 8.1.1918 to 24.1.1918.
Transferred to England 22.2.1918.
Commenced return to Australia 15.4.1918.
William returned home on the 12th June 1918, being discharged medically unfit (neurasthenia - common diagnosis during World War I for "shell shock") on the 19th July 1918.
Nothing located in the Cootamundra Herald regarding enlistment, woundings, returning home, etc.
Mr. James’s name has been inscribed on The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
The original grave photo was taken by me sometime during the late 1990’s, and I have placed poppies at William’s beautifully restored gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
