Bertram served in Palestine (Gaza and Jordan). Sgt. Story and Tpr Roy Kelly were taken prisoners by the Turks at the Gaza Battle 19 April 1917, but made a dash through snipers and machine gun fire, and regained their own lines. Bertram had five bullet holes in his hat. For their bravery they were both promoted as corporals.
