William HESTER (Service Number 3243) was born in 1893 in Kent, England. He started,work as a Tram Conductor in Sydney on 4th September 1914. He remained in this position until 9th September 1915, when he was granted leave to join the AIF. He was 21 at the time.

He proceeded to join the 55th Battalion from Zeitoun (Egypt) on 16th February 1916 and was taken on strength at Tel-el-Kebir on the same day. Later in 1916, on 31st May, he was promoted to Corporal. On 19th June 1916, he embarked to join the British Expeditionary Forces from Alexandria. He disembarked at Marseilles (France) on 29th June.

He was wwounded in action on 20th July 1916 in France. He received a gunshot wound to the arm, and two days later, these wounds killed him. He died at the No. 2 Australian Casualty Clearly Station, France. He was buried on 25th July 1916 in Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, Lille, Nord Pas de Calais, France.

His father, his next of kin, received many personal items following his death, such as letters, photos, and a watch. He also received the British War Medal and the Victory Medal on behalf of his son’s service.
