Died on this date – 17th January…… Charles William Teague was born at Portland, Victoria in 1891.

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 27th September, 1916 as a 25 year old, single, Labourer from Hurd Street, Portland, Victoria. Charles William Teague stated on his Attestation Papers that he had previously served for 4 years with “Naval Cadets Vol 1901” & had previously been rejected as unfit for His Majesty’s Service due to his teeth.

Private Charles William Teague, Service number 7090, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on HMAT Hororata (A20) on 23rd November, 1916 with the 6th Infantry Battalion, 23rd Reinforcements.

On 11th January, 1917 Private Teague was admitted to Ship’s Hospital with a Syncopal attack & was discharged the same day. The Hospital Admissions form recorded the following: “Teague was brought into hospital after having fainted. He had recovered but on examination I found a feeble pulse & on questioning him as to previous attacks he told me he had been subject to them for some time. I found he had a slightly dilated heart with feeble sounds. I gave him a 1/20 strychnine & admitted him and he improved & I discharged him in the afternoon at his own request after warning him not to do any work if any description.”

Private Charles William Teague died on 17th January, 1917 at Sea on board HMAT Hororata (A20) from Heart Failure. The Hospital Admissions form recorded the following: “I was called at 1.35am but on arrival found Teague dead probably having been dead for several hours.”

He was buried at Sea on 17th January, 1917 from HMAT Hororata (A20). He is commemorated on the Hollybrook Memorial, Southampton, Hampshire, England as he has no grave. His death is acknowledged by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
