Born Selby Spencer Smith on 13 Jan 1888 at Northam, Western Australia to George Henry Smith and Sarah Elizabeth Morrell

He originally enlisted under his real name Selby Spencer Smith on 30 Jun 1915 at Keswick, South Australia. He was discharged on 2 Mar 1916 with the notation "not likely to become an efficient soldier"

He re-enlisted on 3 May 1916 at Adelaide, as (2735) Jack Smith with the 50th Infantry Battalion.

Jack was taken as a prisoner of war on 10 Jun 1917 during the Battle of Messines
