Son of Charles Gray Unwin and Rose Hannah Roff formerly Unwin nee Pavitt of Sutherland Street, Broadford, Victoria.

12 June 1916 - enlisted at Bendigo with the 38th Battalion and with the rank of Private.

6 December 1916 - accidentally wounded himself in the foot.

1 June 1917 - wound to the left thumb

26 September 1918 - Alfred married Lottie Elizabeth Sharpe in the Ticehurst Parish Church, Sussex, England. Rev. Charles P. Williams officiated.

20 March 1919 - discharged in London unit demobilised

26 May 1921 - commenced return to Australia aboard HT Beltana with his wife and child.
