Frederick Herman George MEYER (Service Number 3138) was born on 8th October 1889 in Beechworth, Victoria. He commenced his career in the NSW Government Railways and Tramways on 27th July 1914 as a conductor in Sydney in the Tramways Traffic Branch. He was in this position for just over a year until he was granted leave to enlist in the AIF on 12th August 1915. He was 24 when he enlisted. He embarked from Sydney on 20h December 1915 on HMAT A29 ‘Suevic’.

By March 1916, he was in Egypt. He was taken on the strength of the 17th Battalion at Tel-el-Kebir on 11th March 1916. On 19th June 1916, he embarked from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Forces, and he disembarked at Marseilles on 29th June. After only a few months in the field he was wounded in action on 12th October 1916. He was admitted for a gunshot to his left legand a fracture in his right forearm.

He was transferred to the 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station on the same day, but he died of these wounds two days later on 14th October. He was buried in Estaires Communal Cemetery and Extension, Estaires, Nord Pas de Calais, France.

Following his death, his father was sent personal items of his such as a diary, a watch, and a watch chain pendant. His father was also sent his son’s war medals – the British War Medal, and the Victory Medal.
