4 Feb 1919: Honoured Military Medal, For brave courageous action during an attack on enemy trenches near MORLANCOURT on the night 5th/6th May, 1918. During the advance all N.C.O.s of his platoon, excepting himself, were made casualties. He at once assumed command and showed marked coolness and initiative in reorganising his platoon after reaching the final objective, and at once commencing the necessary consolidation of newly won position. Throughout the night he was of the greatest assistance to his Company Commander, his frequent situation reports being of much value.' Source: 'Commonwealth Gazette' No. 15

Let us remember a Fallen soldier of The Great War memorialised at Sandgate Cemetery.

On the 24th July 1918, Corporal Bartholomew Johnson M.M., referred to as Bart, 35th Battalion (Reg No-813), bread carter (Kurri Kurri Co-Operative Store), from Barton Street, Kurri Kurri, New South Wales, was Killed in Action at Hamel, France, age 24 years 4 months. Cause of death unknown.

Born at Adamstown, New South Wales on the 14th March 1894 to William (died 21.6.1927, Wallsend, N.S.W., age 64), from 16 Portland Place, New Lambton, N.S.W., and Elizabeth Johnson nee Hetherington (died 21.8.1948, New Lambton, N.S.W., age 83, mother of 7), from 16 Portland Place, New Lambton, N.S.W., Bart enlisted on the 1st December 1915 at West Maitland, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A24 Benalla on the 1st May 1916.

Disembarked Plymouth, England 9.7.1916.

Granted leave to England from 18.9.1917 to 2.10.1917.

Promoted to Corporal 9.6.1918.

Awarded Military Medal 21st May 1918.

I have placed poppies at the memorialised Johnson gravesite in remembrance of their son’s service and supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country. METHODIST 2 (PRIMITIVE) 21 SW. 9.
