Private Leslie James Callander 10396

When Leslie James Callander was born in 1893 at Numurkah in Victoria, his father Samuel McLay Callander was 32 and his mother Sarah Boyd (nee Callander) was 33 and he had two brothers, Percy McLay Callander (1891-1905) and Samuel Claude Callander (1894-1923) and two sisters, Margaret Elizabeth Callander nee Harris (1897-1976) and Jean McLay Callander (1901-1964).

Following the outbreak of WWI, Leslie James Callander enlisted in Australia's Imperial Force on the 13th of July 1915 when he was aged 22 years 10 months and 5 foot four and a half inches tall, and his Service number was 10396. 'Gunner' Leslie James Callander was initially attached to Reinforcements 2/4th Battalion when he embarked from Australia on the 5th of January 1916 and was attached to the 22nd Australian Field Artillery Brigade, an artillery unit of the Australian Imperial Force when he was wounded in action (gassed) while serving in France on the 3rd of October 1917. On the 5th of January 1920 his unit departed England bound for Australia on the 'Cap Verde' and disembarked at Melbourne on the 26th of February 1920. Gunner Leslie James Callander was Discharged Medically Unfit on the 28th of June 1920 and later awarded the 1914/15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

On the 14th of February 1925 he married Queenie Leitch or Lewitch (nee Callander) in Victoria and they had two daughters, Marjorie Claudia Callander born 1926, and Barbara Callander born 1927 during their marriage. Leslie James Callander died on the 24th of October 1946 in Campbellfield Victoria when he was aged 54, and was buried at the Brighton General Cemetery in South Caulfield.
