Of Rappville via Casino, Richmond River, NSW
Mr. Thomas Henry Ellem, aged 46 years, of Lismore, died in the Lismore Base Hospital last evening after a short illness. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Ellem, of Grafton, and was born in the Clarence River district and lived part of his early life at Wyan. Mr. Ellem senr then moved with his wife and family to Banyabba, where he was engaged in reafforestation work. The late Mr. Ellem com- menced work at a store at Coraki and enlisted in 1914 from there with a brother, William (who was killed in action), was in the landing at Gallipoli, went with the A.I.F. to France, and rose to the rank of sergeant. In England he became engaged to a Birmingham girl and they were married after the late Mr. Ellem returned to Australia. He first opened a general business at South Lismore and relinquished this some 20 years ago to join the staff of A. G. Robertson Ltd., where he remained. He was a member of the M.U.I.O.O.P. (No. 35 Lodge) and was widely known throughout the town and district and popular with all sections of the community.
The late Mr. Ellem is survived by a widow and one son, Gordon, who has completed the first year of his training at the Teachers' Training College at Armidale. He is also survived by his parents, six brothers and two sisters. The brothers are: John (Wyan), Lester (Banyabba), Percy (Railway Department, Kyogle), Charles (Railway Department, Grafton), Lloyd (Dilkoon, Grafton), and Reuben (Railway Department, Glen Innes): the sisters are Mrs. W. Burnett (Coramba) and Mrs. C. Cook (Bangalow). The funeral will leave St. Andrew's Church of England (Lismore) today after a service commencing at 1.45 p.m. The Lismore branch of the Returned Soldiers League will pay military honours to the deceased and all returned men are asked to attend.
