Thomas Theodore Kokkinn was born on 27 August 1887 in Brisbane, to Carl (Charles) Fritzof Kokkinn and Margaret Kokkinn (née Braun). He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in Brisbane on 28 December 1915, aged 28. He recorded his occupation as musician and named his father as next of kin. He was assigned to the 13th Machine Gun Company, and on 2 May 1916 he embarked for overseas service from Sydney aboard HMAT Hororata (A20).
By August 1916 he had joined the Australian Detachment, No. 1 Group Overseas Base, in England. The following year, on 15 August 1917, he was transferred to the Machine Gun Training Depot and classified as “Class B.”
His service was later interrupted by illness. He was admitted to hospital, and his condition led to his repatriation to Australia. On 11 January 1918 he embarked from England aboard H.T. Port Darwin for return to Australia. He was discharged from the Australian Imperial Force on 8 April 1918 as medically unfit for further service, suffering from epilepsy.
Following his return to Australia, he is recorded as living in Brisbane and surrounds and working as a labourer. He also enlisted in the Australian Militia Force at Brisbane on 12 February 1930, serving with the 26th Battalion (Service No. 127216). You can read more about the informal, part-time military formations of the Australian Militia between 1930 and 1945.
Private Thomas Theodore Kokkinn died on 27 March 1951 Brisbane aged 63, and was buried two days later in Anzac Portion 8, Lutwyche Cemetery, Brisbane. He was a single man who never married and had no known children.
After decades without recognition at his place of burial, his grave now bears a plaque commemorating his service to Australia — ensuring his name endures among those remembered for their duty and sacrifice. His identity and dignity have now been restored.
We have remembered him.
Lest We Forget.
