Served during The Great War, died tragically, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
90 years ago today, on the 21st June 1931, Private John Alexander Todd, 56th Battalion (Reg No-219, Mr. Todd was 1 of 5 to be buried on the Sunday, 21st June 1931), coal trimmer from the Oriental Hotel, Carrington, New South Wales and 109 Lott Street, Carrington, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 54. ANGLICAN 2-113. 71.
No funeral or death notice located.
Born at Tynemouth, North Shields, England about 1877 to William and Isabella Todd nee Storey, John enlisted November 1915 with the 35th Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.
John’s service record indicates no wounds, but was admitted to hospital on the 21.6.1917 with varicose veins, returning home June 1919, being discharged as medically unfit on the 31st August 1919.
Mr. Todd’s name has been inscribed on the Carrington Citizens' Memorial Gates.
The tragic circumstances of John’s death were reported.
I have placed poppies at John’s gravesite in remembrance of his service for God, King and Country.
I submitted an application to DVA May 2020 asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque to be placed at the gravesite, unfortunately still waiting for a decision.
Many thanks to Phil Winney and members of Merewether - Hamilton - Adamstown sub-Branch for the purchase of death certificate.
The Great War never ended for many of our Returned Veterans.
Lest We Forget.
