Husband of Ruth CLEAVES
Gunner William Cleaves, of C sub. rect. 6th Battery, AF A., was killed in action in France on July 31st. Gunner Cleaves was a member of the local Salvation Army Band, the second member to hear the call of his country. He enlisted in the A.F.A. He is the first of the bandsmen to make the supreme sacrifice. Gunner Cleaves was at the landing on Gallipoli, and went through the campaign. Afterwards he went to France where he fought in many hard battles and was wounded several times. He leaves a wife and two children. Gunner Cleaves worked at Newport Shops in his civilian life.
