Alfred Miles was born in Barrow-in-Furness, Lancashire, England but grew up in Wollongong, Australia. He worked as a labourer before enrolling with the AIF for the Great War. Miles also had a brother, James Miles, who joined the army and both brothers listed their father, F. Miles as their next of kin.

Miles enlisted for the war at Kembla Heights, Wollongong, NSW, and embarked on the R.M.S Osterly from Sydney on the 15th January, 1916.

Miles was killed in action on the 6th of November 1916 in Pozieres, Somme Sector, France. He was only 23 years old when he passed and is buried at Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, Picardie, France.
