Son of Frederick MacKinnon Harding and Beatrice Christian Harding, of Tyne Foundry, South Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Born in Coburg, Victoria.
He enlisted as Stanley Frederick Harding but his father pointed out his correct name was Frederick Stanley.
Frederick enlisted in early 1915 at Yarrawonga, Victoria where he was working as a station hand. He served with the 22nd Battalion at Gallipoli from September 1915 until the evacuation.
He took part in a big raid on the German trenches on the night of 29 June 1916 and then fought at Pozieres. He was badly wounded at Flers on the 17 November 1916, taking part in another raid, gunshot wounds to the thigh and head, and died in a Casualty Clearing Station two days later.
