William embarked with his unit the 50th Battalion from Adelaide on board HMAT A 60 Aeneas on 11 April 1916. He was sent to Alexandria where he embarked the Franconia on 6 June and disembarked at Plymouth on 16 June. William joined his unit in France on 17 July. He was killed in action in France on 2 April 1917 and was buried at Noreuil Australian Cemetery.
