Gordon left Adelaide on board HMAT Borda on 11 January 1916 and with the 10th Battalion was sent to France on 2 June. He suffered a wound to the right leg during action on 16 August, receiving treatment in the field and on 21 June at Western General Hospital in Manchester, England. Gordon transferred to the 70th Battalion on 25 March 1917 and returned to France with his unit to reinforce the 50th on 12 September. He was killed in action at Villers- Bretonneux on 25 April 1918. His mother, Annie, received his Victory Medal, Memorial Plaque and Memorial Scroll between November 1921 and March 1923.
