Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Trooper David Fisher (Service No:1161) was in Mitchell, QLD on 4 March 1915 when he enlisted in the AIF, and was attached to 5th Light Horse Regiment on 10 August 1915 when he embarked with his Unit from Brisbane for Alexandria on board HMAT A55 Kyarra. Trooper Fisher served with the 5th Light Horse Regiment at Gallipoli and in Egypt, and was WiA (GSW to left chest - dangerously ill) on 11 December 1917. Trooper Fisher embarked from Suez for Brisbane on 15 February 1918 on board HMAT Ulysses, and was attached to 5th Light Horse Regiment at Discharge on 26 April 1918. Older brother Alf (Service No:794) served on the Western Front in WWI.

David Albert Fisher was born in Narrandera, New South Wales in 1897, twelfth of thirteen children of Peter Fisher (b1843 in Melbourne, Victoria) and Elizabeth Jackson (b1854 in Melbourne, Victoria). Peter was fifteen years of age (1858) when he moved to Ardlethan in New South Wales and started working as a Station Hand - 'He was a great bushman, sound timber worker, and had few equals as a station hand, being able to do any class of work. He spent his early working life on Barellan, Mumbledool and Bygoo stations' (Obituary; Naranderra Argus; 1935). Peter and Elizabeth married in 1874 in Wagga Wagga, and settled at Almond Flats in Ardlethan via Temora where they raised their family and Peter was a Farmer and Carpenter. In October 1935 the Peter Fisher Memorial Bell was erected in his honour at the Barellan Public School.

David worked as a Drover, and was in Mitchell QLD in 1915 when he enlisted in the Army. Following his Discharge, in 1929 in Rockhampton QLD, David married Hilda Victoria Sheldrake (b1901 in Rockhampton, QLD) - Hilda was working as a Dairy Hand at Altona Downs via Livingstone. In the early 1930s David and Hilda lived in Sandgate QLD, where David worked as a Mechanic, returning in the mid 1930s to Rockhampton where they raised their family. Dabid worked as a Labourer, and in the early 1940s he and Hilda settled in Harveston via Livingstone, where David was a Share Farmer until his death in 1966. Hilda died in 1979.
