Son of Mark Usher and Sarah Usher nee McNamambly of Bacchus Marsh, Victoria formerly from Burra, SA.

James served a five year apprenticeship for butchering with Simpson Bros of Bacchus March, Victoria

Brother of Alfred John Usher who returned to Australia on 20 August 1919 having served with the 3rd Motor Transport Company and  Mark Usher who returned to Australia on 28 December 1918 having served with the 3rd Division Train.

Commenced return to Australia on 5 March 1919 aboard HT Nevasa disembarking on 18 April 1919

Medals: 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal

On 18 January 1930 James married Vera Edith Maggie Prosser at the brides residence.
