The true family name was Scarff. He was Private Matthew Henry Staples  Scarff but served under the alias of Henry McShane. His Service Number was 878. He served with the 2nd Bn. Australian Infantry, A.I.F.

He was 29 and the son of George and Mary Jane Scarff; husband of Edith Scarff (nee Rannard) of 28 Bagnall St., Anfield, Liverpool, England.
