Biography contributed by Helen Harmer

James Henry Dalziel Adam was born in Fremantle in January 1897 and enlisted at Perth on 6.2.1916. Aged 19 years and 1 month, he had permission from both parents, James Hunter Adam and Mary R. Adam. His father lived in Mary Street Fremantle and his mother in Broome House, Broome St Cottesloe. He had previously served with the 96th Infantry and was still serving at the time of his enlistment. He was described as being 5’7 ½” tall, with fair complexion, grey eyes, fair hair and a chest measurement of 29-33 inches. He was assigned service number 271, with the 44th Battalion, C Company. His occupation was a clerk and his denomination Presbyterian. James embarked from Fremantle on HMAT Suevic A29 on the 6.6.1916 and served in France. He attended hospital with bronchitis in December 1916. On 25.8.1917 he was promoted to Corporal, as Corporal Mills had been evacuated for over 3 months. On the 19.11.18 he was promoted to CQMS of the 44th Battalion. James returned to Fremantle on the 21.6.1919 on the Konigin Luise and disembarked on the 2.8.1919. He was discharged on the 17.9.1919. In April 1947, Daisy Sarah Esther Marie Adam of St George’s Terrace Perth was granted a divorce from James, on the grounds that the parties had lived apart for five years or more and were unlikely to resume cohabitation. James died in South Perth on the 22.10.1974 at the age of 77. He was cremated at Karrakatta cemetery and his ashes scattered.
