Lt R. L. Tremain, D.C.M., eldest son of Mr R. Tremain, of Grant street west, was reported missing in August, 1916, but is now reported to have been killed in action on that date. The deceased soldier, who was 20 years of age at the time of his death, enlisted as a private in January, 1915, and sailed in the May following, leaving with the 23rd Battalion, to which he was attached. He was awarded the D.C.M. and his commission on the battlefield, and saw service in Egypt and France. Prior to enlisting he was employed by the firm of John McLeod and Co., of Lydiard street, and he was educated at the Dana street school and School of Mines.
