Joseph Peacock enlisted with his brother George Peacock, both being original members of the 35th Battalion. Joseph was killed in action at Messines on 7 June 1917, and although he was buried east of a mines crater in German reserve lines, 1 mile South of Messines, Belgium, his grave destroyed in subsequent fighting and his remains were lost. His brother George was soon after awarded a Military Medal and returned to Australia in 1919. Another brother, William Thomas Peacock also served overseas in the AIF.
They were the sons of Thomas and Charlotte Peacock of West Maitland, New South Wales.
