Awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for gallantry on 07 Nov 1917 at Tel El Sheria... "in the face of heavy machine gun and rifle fire, he crawled about 60 yards towards the advancing enemy, mounted his Hotchkiss gun and inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy and held them oin check, and carried out his duties for nearly six hours, regardless of fire, showing great daring, coolnes and courage in the manipulation of his gun which set a fine example to all ranks."
