Maurice Kaye Williamson was born on the 22nd of April 1887 and grew up in Klemzig, South Australia. Before joining the war, Williamson was a nursery man. His father, Rev C.H.D Williamson, was listed as his next of kin on his enlistement papers. Williamson was 27 years old when he enlisted with the Australian Imperial Forces on the 28th of November 1914.

March 1915, Williamson embarked the H.M.T. Osmanieh in Lemnos Greece where the logistical installations were located such as hospitals, supply depots, and rest camps. . On the 4th of September 1915 until 26th September 1915, Williamson trained in Alexandria and joined the 10th Infantry Battalion 2nd Reinforcement.

Williamson’s first battle was at Gallipoli between 28th September to 2nd December 1915.
