Biography

"THE LATE PRIVATE A. I. OLIVER.

Mr. and Mrs. John G. Oliver, of "Romsdale," Wilson-road, Cowandilla, have been informed that their son, Private Allan Ifould Oliver, was killed in action in France on November 20. Private Oliver left for the front in April last. He received his education at the Thebarton Public School, and was employed by Messrs. Goode, Durrant, & Co., up to the time of enlisting. For some time he was assistant secretary at the Torrensville Methodist Sunday-school, and for many years was a member of the Juvenile Rechabite Tent. An elder brother, Private J. H. Oliver, sailed for Egypt on May 31, 1915, and has seen service at Gallipoli, Egypt, France, and Belgium. Both lads came from good fighting stock, an interesting relic in the home being a Victoria Cross won by Mr. Oliver's uncle, Sergeant-Major John Grieve, in the Crimean war on October 15, 1854." - from the Adelaide Chronicle 30 Dec 1916 (nla.gov.au)
