Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery, not forgotten.

54 years ago today, on the 8th November 1968, Private William Thomas Murray, 2nd Battalion (Reg No-4848), labourer from 144 or 145 Lambton Road, New Lambton, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 73. ANGLICAN 3-198. 30.

Born at Broadmeadow, New South Wales on the 6th September 1895 to William Thomas and Emily Jane Murray (Ivery); husband of Lilian (Lillian) May Murray nee Wheeler (married 1928, West Maitland, N.S.W., died 1957, age 56, sleeping here), William enlisted August 1915 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Wounded in action - 6.2.1917 (bomb wounds right & left legs, arm and chest, severe).

William was invalided home August 1917, being discharged medically unfit on the 27th September 1917.

Mr. Murray’s name has been inscribed on the Hamilton Superior Public School Roll of Honor and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name not inscribed on the New Lambton War Memorial Gates or the Lambton and New Lambton Municipal District Roll of Honor.

I have placed poppies at the gravesite in remembrance of William’s service and sacrifice for God, King & Country. Note – gravesite in urgent need of restoration.
