Sydney left Adelaide on board HMAT A30 Borda on 11 January 1916 and was sent to France with the 10th Battalion as a Driver on 7 May. He transferred to the 50th Battalion on 29 February. On 5 November Sydney was admitted to Eastbourne Military Hospital, England suffering from mild valvular heart disease. As a result he was returned to Australia from Devonport, England on the Beltana on 17 March 1917 and was discharged as medically unfit on 22 June.

On the 13th of August 1915, at the age of 21, Lehmann enlisted into the war. He was commenced in the 10th Battalion & 13th Reinforcement. This unit embarked from Adelaide, on board HMAT A30 Borda on the 11th of January 1916. 

Lehman was hospitalised with Influenza from 7/3/16 - 11/3/16. He was appointed as a driver on 6/5/1916. He was once again sent to hospital in November 1916 with Vulvular Disease of the heart. During 1917 he found himself in trouble several times. He was detained for 168 hours after breaking into camp in February 1917. He was sent back to Australia 17/3/1917 due to his poor health and was hospitalised. He was then punished for going AWL twice on 21/5/1917 and was lost 7 days pay and then again 5/6/17 and lost 1 days pay.

He was discharged 22/6/1917.
