Bertram William Curtis was born on 27 Dec 1877 at Fortitude Valley, Brisbane, a son to Capt. William Edward Curtis and Mary Curtis (nee Boreham) with his early years spent in Bundaberg. He served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW1.

First service was as a Lieutenant in the 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer War. Second service was as a Corporal rising to Sergeant S.N. 282 in the 2nd Light Horse Regiment, B Squadron, AIF WW1. He was severely wounded at Gallipoli on 19 Jun 1915 sustaining a gunshot wound to the chest and shrapnel to the back. Following recovery he was transferred to AIF Headquaters.

After WW1 he married Emily Curry on 21 Jun 1923 at Longreach, Queensland.
