Biography contributed by Andreena Hockley

"Alexander Henderson Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alex. Miller, of Berwick, and husband of Mrs. Belle Miller, The Avenue, East Malvern, younger daughter of the Hon. A. A. Billson, M.L.A., formerly Minister of Education, was born on the 21st of November, 1884.

Entering the service of this Department in 1906, he held the posts of junior teacher at Oakleigh and at Berwick (his birthplace). He was admitted to the Teachers' College in 1908, and he left with the Trained Teacher s Certificate in 1909.

He taught the half-time schools at Moondarra and Bell's Flat, and was assistant master at Beechworth. An earnest and painstaking teacher, he ceased duty on the 14th of July, 1915.

Alex Miller was a bright and cheery personality; hence his sobriquet amongst his fellow-students of "Jolly Miller."

While teaching at Bell's Flat, he resided in Yackandandah, where he was prominently known among athletic clubs - tennis, golf, and football. He was secretary of the Mechanics' Institute and a member of the Presbyterian Church Choir. At Beechworth, he was equally to the fore in athletic and musical circles.

His letters from the front, in spite of hardships and fatigue, invariably glowed with a sunny optimism.

He enlisted as a Private on the 15th of July, 1915, and was promoted to commissioned rank on the 6th of March, 1916. He embarked with the 3rd Reinforcements to the 57th Battalion on the transport Ajana on the 15th of July. After training in England, he proceeded to France and joined his unit on the 7th of December. On the 23rd of January, 1917, he was promoted Lieutenant, and was killed on the 25th of September."
