Lachlan John MacDonald was born in early 1887 at Queenscliff, Victoria to parents John & Hannah MacDonald (nee Johnstone).   

He married Ellen Beatric (Nelly) Smith in 1909 in the district of Redfern, Sydney, New South Wales.

On 15th March, 1917 Lachlan John MacDonald enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) as a 30 year old, married (with 3 children), Mail Contractor from Gipsy Point, Victoria.

Private Lachlan John MacDonald, Service number 7541, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on HMAT Themistocles (A32) on 4th August, 1917 with the 6th Infantry Battalion, 25th Reinforcements.

He was admitted to Ship’s Hospital on 21st August, 1917 suffering from Influenza. The Hospital Admissions form recorded on admission “Vomiting, sore throat & frontal headache. T. 103 P. 120.”

 

Private Lachlan John MacDonald died on 5th September, 1917 at Sea on board HMAT Themistocles (A32)  from Cerebro Spinal Meningitis.

He was buried at Sea from HMAT Themistocles (A32) on 5th September, 1917. He is commemorated on the Hollybrook Memorial, Southampton, Hampshire, England as he has no grave. His death is acknowledged by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
