Private Thomas Patrick Byrne (Service No:2277) enlisted in the AIF at Ballarat on 30 March 1916, and was attached to 39th Infantry Battalion on 20 October 1916 when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for Plymouth on board HMAT A17 Port Lincoln. Private Byrne was hospitalised in England (Fargo Military Hospital) with Influenza in February 1917, and embarked from Enland for Melbourne on 21 July 1917 on board HT Euripides. Private Byrne was attached to 39 Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 23 October 1917. Siblings Frank (WWI), Larry (WWII) and Jock (WWII) also served in the Military.

Born in Steiglitz, Victoria in 1896, Thomas was third of seven children of Thomas Byrne Snr (b1862 at Long Gully via Steiglitz, Victoria) and Susan Anastasia Byrne (b1871 in Meredith, Victoria). Thomas Snr (a Labourer) and Susan married in 1892 in Steiglitz, where they settled and raised their family and Thomas Snr was a Labourer.

Thomas - described as 'always being delicate' (NAA) - was a Labourer when he enlisted in the AIF. Following his Discharge (Medically Unfit) he returned to Steiglitz, where he was lsited as a 'Soldier' in the 1919 Electoral Roll. Thomas died (Tuberculosis) in 1920.
