William Scott Hunter was born on 26 Oct 1870 (BDM Qld record 30 Oct 1870) at Ipswich, Queensland, a son to Alexander Hunter and Agnes Hunter (nee Scott). He married Alice Sarah Adie on 8 Jan 1896 in Queensland and they had 3 children.

He served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW1. First service was as a Lieutenant in the 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer War. Second service was as a Lieutenant in the 11th Light Horse Regiment AIF, WW1.
